Haverhill's Brightside is planning a fundraising trip to Newport RI in June 2018. The trip will include admission to the Newport flower show, admission to one of the two mansions (The Breakers or The Marble House) a luncheon at the Atlantic Resort and the motor coach. More details to follow in the up coming months.

NOW IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE ASK GOOD FRIENDS OF HAVERHILL'S BRIGHTSIDE FOR THEIR ANNUAL SUPPORT. HAVERHILL'S BRIGHTSIDE IS DEDICATED TO THE BEAUTIFICATION OF CITY PROPERTY, YET, ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF OUR OPERATING EXPENSES COME DIRECTLY FROM CITY FUNDS. THE MAJORITY OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS DEPEND ON VOLUNTEER EFFORTS AND THE SUPPORT OF INDIVIDUALS LIKE YOU, WHO TAKE PRIDE IN THE APPEARANCE OF OUR CITY.
LET ME EXPLAIN A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT BRIGHTSIDE DOES FOR THE HAVERHILL COMMUNITY.
At the start of 2016, Brightside was overseeing seventy Adopt-a-Park sites throughout the city. Adopt-a-Park sites are small city parks and traffic islands that are planted and maintained by the businesses, families, or individuals. Brightside gives these adoptees an identifying sign to promote their business or simply show their pride in their gardening endeavors. Over the course of the year twelve more Adopt-a-Park sites were added, bringing the total to 82 locations that delight the eye as you drive through Haverhill.
Brightside managed the installation of nineteen large planters throughout the core of the city and contracted for their planting and maintenance, so that even some of the city's most concentrated areas sparkled with flowers and foliage. Over the course fo the year the number of planters has increased to 32. We beautified the Global Peace Memorial, Riverfront Park, Duston Park, Garden Walkway, Pentucket Historic Site, First Landing Park, have placed hanging flower baskets in Bradford Square, Lafayette Square and Monument Square, and had the planter wall in Washington Square repaired.
Haverhill's Brightside oversees three Community Gardens at Harrison Street, River Street, and Tattersall Farm. These Gardens give those who don't have garden areas of their own, a place to grow - and share - fresh produce throughout the summer.
Many of our programs include annual events. In the Spring, Brightside helps coordinate Haverhill's City Wide-Cleanup. We not only concentrate on the downtown areas of the city, but the entire community as well. Last April we held our annual Environmental /Community Heroes Night where we honored sixteen individuals who have gone above and beyond in helping to make Haverhill a better place to live. Our Bloomfest event in the fall concentrates on one or more areas of the city to improve and plant perennials and bulbs. In December, we place the garland around the framework of the Christmas Bell.

Haverhill's Brightside has partnered with the Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation in the promotion of "Greening the Gateway City Program" here in Haverhill.
We encourage anyone interested in having a tree (of your choice) planted on your property or in your neighborhood FREE OF CHARGE to contact Mark Ghen, Urban Forester at 781-540-4322 or Nathan Tobey, Urban Forester at 781-400-0933 from Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
Trees play and important role in our environment and in our lives. Trees provide shade and keep our homes cooler in the summer and help to keep our homes a little warmer in the winter months by cutting down the wind currents coming into our homes, and most important they provide oxygen, just to name a few of the benefits trees give us. We encourage the community to take advantage of this great program.

Adopt-a-Parks completed this year:
< Riverfront Park is now complete with new gardens throughout the park and boardwalk area. New sand has been added to the Bocci court for better playing conditions. Volunteer Bruce Donohue mows the lawn. Volunteer Bill Rogers waters the gardens throughout the summer. This could not be done without the help of the Tap Restaurant donating their hose and water until the irrigation system is connected to the Tap.
The long extended boardwalk in the parking lot was redone with decorative grasses and bark mulch for easy maintenance.
< Brightside on Earth Day cleaned up the historic site on Mill Street and had the sign restored by muralist Jeff Merrill.
< Brightside worked with Carl Beltzer of Beltzer Realty in creating this beautiful park, with the anchor from the Nantucket Lightship as it’s center piece. Mr. Beltzer has maintained this site for a number of years now by providing his own landscaper to mow the site. He appreciated all Brightside’s help with this project.
< First Landing Park on Water Street is coming to completion. In May Brightside Board and volunteers filled 35 yard bags, removed the old broken arbor and cleaned out the garden areas.
Under the guidance of Christine Hardiman graphic designer with Primary Design and Vice President of Haverhill’s Brightside designed a new arbor for the park. It was built and installed by the Brightside Board. Dave Labrode chairperson for Brightside’s City Wide Clean-up Program with his wife Cat volunteer to make park benches when needed and this year 9 benches were needed for different locations in the city, three going into First Landing Park. Flowers were planted around the stone monument that is dedicated to the Duston Family who are buried across the street in the Pentucket Burial Ground. Groveland Fence on Monday September 18th is installing a new post & chain fence along the front entrance.
Adopt-a-Planter Program:
This program has been very successful with 32 planters being adopted. Brightside purchased 7 planters this year at a cost of $625 per planter. These planters where placed on islands outside the core of the city and in Lafayette Square, Bradford Square and Currier Square areas. Brightside provides the soil, summer flowers and signage for the planters. The sponsors are responsible for the maintenance of the planter which consists of the watering & feeding of the plants, deadheading and trimming of the sweet potato vine, the removal of the summer flowers in the fall and the adding of the greens and berries for the winter months at a cost of $170 for the year.
Bradford Burial Ground:
< The Tenney Family is to be commended for their dedication in maintaining and preserving this historic site. This burial ground is now on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to Barron Tenney and the Tenney Family Association. The Tenney Family Association has also donated $5000 for the removal of a large pine tree at the burial ground that was in danger of falling onto the stones and creating more damage. They are on September 29, 2017 holding a New England Bean Supper at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Barron Tenney as a kick off to a fundraiser to help restore the stones at the burial ground.
Bloomfest”
< On Saturday, September 16, 2017 Brightside planted peach rose bushes and blueberry pie ground cover sedum around the circle at the Haverhill Police Station. Spring of 2019 Brightside will place two small planters on either side of the entrance to the police station.
Environmental Awards Night:
< Scheduled for Thursday April 5, 2018 at Maria’s Restaurant, 80 Essex Street, Haverhill, Ma.

In 2016 Brightside under the Adopt-a-Planter Program installed 32 island planters throughout the city. All the planters have been adopted by businesses, Service Groups and private individuals.
In fall of 2016 Brightside's Bloomfest Program went into Riverfront Park behind the Tap Reasaurant and planted decorative grasses, peach rosebushes, Stella Dora Day Lillies, Veronica, and fall mums in the garden along the boardwalk. In the flag pole area peach rosebushes were also planted.
Brightside also planted Blue Hosta and fall mum's along the inside garden.
On Earth Day 2017 Brightside cleaned up the Pentucket Historic site on Mill Street.
Planted perennials around the historic mark and paid muralist Jeff Morgan to restore the sign. Brightside maintains the site throughout the year and places a fall mum at the site and a planter of evergreens for the holiday and winter season.

In spring of 2018 Brightside will have to smaller planters placed on either side of the front entrance to the station with shade plants planted.
Wydoila Park at the boat ramp on Stanley Drive is dedicated to Steve Wydoila who was the Conservation Officer in Haverhill for many years.
Riverside's newest park at the Groveland Bridge going from Haverhill to Groveland. The anchor centerpiece is from the Nantucket Lightship that was donated to the Haverhill Scouts and later to the Groveland Scouts. It went aground in the bend in the river just after the Groveland Bridge from the great flood.
This is a must see Brightside Adopt--Park garden at the Winnekenni Basin next to the tennis court. This is one of three beautiful gardens in the park

On Earth Day 2017 the Brightside Board members, Christine Hardiman, Barron Tenney, and Christine Rau, with volunteers Jennifer Couture, Bill Rogers, and Jim Rau cleaned -up the Pentucket historic site on Mill Street. Brightside hired muralist Jeff Morgan to restore the historic mark. Brightside is now maintaining the site.
Duston Park at Main & Primrose Street was installed by Haverhill's Brightside and the Park's Dept. The park has been adopted by Lupi Landscaping. Lupi Landscaping donated and installed a new irrigation system for the park.

This burial ground is on the National Register of Historic Places. The burial site is on Salem Street in the Bradford section of Haverhill.
